Emma’s Poem

I watched you drown yourself
In a bottle of your own broken truths
And how you slapped on the clothes
That made a bad situation
Look better
I saw how you coated your lips
With the juice of a berry
And outlined your eyes
With coal from a train
You ran from your shelter
Through the woods down a path
The timing was right
And you soared through the air
The moon was pulsing through the clouds
At times, bright enough to cast shadows
Illuminating the world around you,
Then the powerful halt of an engine
The earth screeching from all sides
And three months gone by
I hadn’t heard from you
Until I discovered through
The grapevine
I’ll never hear your voice again
Shit, I’ve even forgotten what it sounded like
And the last time I ever touched your skin
There was a downpour and a good bye
(For now, I thought)
But I’ll never forget looking into
Your wild eyes
searching for that lasting buzz
And I wonder as the trains rumble by
Was death your final high?
